Lemko Churches and the Poprad Valley - along the trail of wood and water

The eastern part of the Sądecki Beskids holds a heritage hard to find elsewhere in Poland— the wooden Lemko churches scattered along the Poprad Valley. This is a trip for those seeking not only trails but also history in the mountains.

Who were the Lemkos?

The Lemkos are an ethnic group that inhabited the Sądecki and Low Beskids for centuries. They left behind distinctive sacred architecture—wooden Orthodox churches with three main sections of varying heights, each with domed towers. Today, they are among the region's most valuable historical monuments.

The UNESCO Pearl in Powroźnik

The most valuable structure is the Orthodox Church of St. James the Younger in Powroźnik . It is the oldest preserved wooden church in the Polish Carpathians, and in 2013 it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Its structure and furnishings are truly impressive.

Wooden Architecture Trail

The Orthodox churches of the Beskid Sądecki Mountains are part of the Wooden Architecture Trail in Małopolska—a road route connecting dozens of sites. They can be explored by car or bicycle, combining sightseeing with a hike through the valley.

Poprad Gorge

The Poprad Valley winds through the Orthodox churches, one of the most beautiful river gorges in the Polish Carpathians. It encompasses the areas around Rytro, Piwniczna-Zdrój, Wierchomla, Żegiestów, and Muszyna. In the second half of the 19th century, the strategic Tarnów–Leluchów railway line was built here, and it still follows a picturesque route along the river today.

Cycling through the valley

A Velo Małopolska cycling trail runs through the Poprad Valley, including a section of the international EuroVelo 11 route. The gentle slope along the river makes for a pleasant ride, and along the way you'll pass spas, footbridges over the Poprad River, and more wooden churches.

What to combine in one day

The ideal plan would be a morning in Muszyna (Sensory Gardens and castle), a drive through the valley with stops at Orthodox churches, and an afternoon in Rytro, near the ruins of a medieval castle. It's a journey through the layers of the region's history—from the Middle Ages, through Lemko culture, to the era of spas.
